The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, were American aviation pioneers who conducted the first successful heavier-than-air controlled, powered and sustained human flight on December 17, 1903 near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Over the next decade, they continued developing aircraft and establishing the basic principles of aerodynamic control that are still used today. Though their achievements were initially met with skepticism, Wilbur's public flights in France in 1908 demonstrated their aircraft's capabilities and established their fame. Both remained unmarried and dedicated to aeronautical research and development, making significant contributions to the foundations of modern aviation.
