Il Volo is an Italian operatic pop trio made up of Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble. They initially started out as solo artists performing on the singing competition Ti lascio una canzone until the show's creator came up with the idea of putting them together as a group. Later that same year, they signed their first contract with an American music label.
The group released their first album in and went on to huge international success, especially in Latin America. They have also performed with many of the music world's biggest stars including Barbra Streisand.
They won the San Remo Festival with the song Grande Amore, giving them the honor of representing Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest which they accepted, and performed their San Remo winner in Vienna. They had a direct entry into the final as Italy is a member of the Big Five. Despite winning the televote, they ended up placing 3rd overall due to placing 6th with the jury. This marked the first time in the split-voting system in which this occurred.
The group returned to the San Remo festival in with the song "Musica che resta", finishing in third place.
